Not a cult

SCRIPTURE: “And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.” –D&C 88:118. [source]

QUOTE: “For you to understand the doctrinal and historical content and context of the scriptures and our history, you will need to study from the ‘best books,’ as the Lord directed. The ‘best books’ include the scriptures, the teachings of modern prophets and apostles, and the best LDS scholarship available. Through your diligent efforts to learn by study and faith, you will be able to help your students learn the skills and attitudes necessary to distinguish between reliable information that will lift them up and the half-truths and incorrect interpretations of doctrine, history, and practices that will bring them down. Teach them about the challenges they face when relying upon the Internet to answer questions of eternal significance. Remind them that James did not say, ‘If any of you lack wisdom, let him Google!’” –M. Russell Ballard, speaking to CES teachers, 26 February 2016. [source]

COMMENTARY: I’m sick and tired of ignorant people calling the church a cult. Cults try to limit their members’ exposure to information from outside of the cult, and the LDS church would never do that. If you don’t believe me, just try this one experiment. Go to an LDS chapel and connect to their wifi. Then fire up your web browser and type mormonthink.com into the address bar. If they were a cult, don’t you think they would block a website that offers the truth about their history and practices? I just tried it and … oh, shit. Blocked. Huh. I have no idea what this means. But they’re definitely NOT a cult. So don’t even think it. But what do I know? I’m just another apostate.
