Blood Atonement

QUOTE: “It is true that the blood of the Son of God was shed for sins through the fall and those committed by men, yet men can commit sins which it can never remit.” -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 4, p. 54. [source]

QUOTE: “This is loving our neighbour as ourselves; if he needs help, help him; and if he wants salvation and it is necessary to spill his blood on the earth in order that he may be saved, spill it.” -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 4, p. 220. [source]

OFFICIAL CHURCH STATEMENT: “In the mid-19th century, when rhetorical, emotional oratory was common, some church members and leaders used strong language that included notions of people making restitution for their sins by giving up their own lives. However, so-called ‘blood atonement,’ by which individuals would be required to shed their own blood to pay for their sins, is not a doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We believe in and teach the infinite and all-encompassing atonement of Jesus Christ, which makes forgiveness of sin and salvation possible for all people.” -Statement issued by the LDS church, June 2010. COMMENTARY: Good thing prophets of the church can never lead us astray, because I shudder to think what some members might have done had the prophet of the church taught that some sins required people to die in order to be saved. But what do I know? I’m just another apostate.

  1. Such an important church doctrine to take note of: its one that is disavowed and shunned, when it’s even admitted to at all. What else do we need to know to make the decision to leave the church? Brigham Young, who supposedly held priesthood keys and was a “holy prophet” of the christian god, taught an anti-christian doctrine…how is he NOT a false prophet? These sermons were delivered from the pulpit, he was not speaking as a man.
