NEWS SUMMARY: Utah Senate Bill 296—which was signed into law in March 2015, following a whirlwind approval process in the Senate and House after endorsement by the LDS Church, despite similar bills failing to pass for the past seven years—prohibits discrimination against gays in the areas of housing and employment for everyone except religious organizations and the Boy Scouts of America; they get a free pass to continue to discriminate. SCRIPTURE: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” -Jesus, as quoted in Matthew 7:12. [source]
COMMENTARY: I have to admit I am perplexed why the church would say, “you guys better not discriminate, because God doesn’t think that’s a very nice thing to do,” and then refuse to support a law against discrimination until there was an exclusion that allowed for the church to continue to discriminate. That seems to me like the height of hypocrisy. “Do as I say, not as I do.” But what do I know? I’m just another apostate.
