SCRIPTURE: “And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.” -Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 27:8. COMMENTARY: Why did the name of the church change, and why did one of those changes involve removing the name of Christ from the church? Was Jesus just indecisive? Was he a little self-conscious of having his name on display so prominently? Of course, the most obvious explanation for the name changes, i.e., that men, not Christ, were leading the church, is dismissed by believers as preposterous. But what do I know? I’m just another apostate.
