SCRIPTURE: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.” -Joseph Smith, LDS Article of Faith 11, found in the Pearl of Great Price. [source]
COMMENTARY: If freedom of religion is to apply, it has to apply to everyone, which means that your religious beliefs don’t get to dictate what laws other people have to follow. If you believe God says that people shouldn’t marry someone of the same gender, then you are free to not marry someone of your same gender. If you are LDS and you try to force your religious observances on other people, you are acting in clear violation of the eleventh Article of Faith. I don’t think Jesus would ask his prophets to do that. But what do I know? I’m just another apostate.
